Macaranga pearsonii Merr.

Trees up to ca. 40 m tall and 70 cm dbh, reproductive from 4 m tall and 7 cm dbh. Twigs solid or hollow (depending on ant colonization), glabrous, usually glaucous, with small ant openings (ca. 1 mm diameter). Stipules broadly ovate to ovate, usually early-caducous, erect, not or (almost) surrounding the twigs completely, 6-11 mm long by 5-14 mm wide. Petioles glabrous, up to ca. 30 cm long. Leaves alternate, usually not peltate, 3-lobed, 10.5-28 cm long by 10-30 cm wide, length/width-ratio 0.66-1.05; secondary veins 8-14, ending in the margin; central lobe 4.5-12.5 cm long by 4.5-10 cm wide, lateral lobes 2-9.5 cm long; leaf base usually cordate (also when peltate), rarely broadly rounded, with several conspicuously enlarged conical glands along the basal margin near the petiole insertion, peltate margin length (when present) 0.1-1.7 cm; leaf margin with glands; leaf upper surface glabrous to hairy on veins; leaf lower surface hairy, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with fimbriate margin. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 5-6 mm wide, 2-locular, completely covered with glands.

Ecology: Collected up to 1500 m altitude. An early successional tree species found in disturbed sites in primary forest, and in secondary forests.

Distribution: Endemic for Borneo, where it has been collected in Sarawak, Sabah, East- and South-Kalimantan.
